Bishop Bootkoski offers a comprehensive vision for vibrant parish life in a pastoral letter which he presented at St. Francis of Assisi Cathedral June 2. Additional gatherings followed in each county of the diocese.
Diocese organizes activities to celebrate Year for Priests
The Diocese of Metuchen is planning a variety of activities to commemorate the Year for Priests, which formally begins June 19, the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Pope Benedict XVI proclaimed the Year for Priests to help priests “rediscover the grace and the goal of priestly ministry.”
Committed to Christ: Spiritual development of Scouts recognized at annual Mass
Whether they are learning survival skills on camping trips or helping the needy through community service projects, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts make a commitment of time and energy. Just as important to the scouting life is a commitment to grow spiritually, which is nurtured by activities such as learning about the sacraments and saints and praying the rosary. That commitment was recognized by the diocese at the annual Scout Mass at St. Francis of Assisi Cathedral June 13.
Knights of Columbus Council 1432 celebrates centennial
For 100 years, the Knights of Columbus Council 1432 has served the community and upheld Catholic values. To commemorate a century of charity, dedication to God and patriotism, Bishop Paul G. Bootkoski celebrated a centennial Mass for the 430 members of the council and their families at Immaculate Conception Church, June 14.
Diocese sponsors pro-life film screening
Abortion, one of the most divisive issues in society, was the focal point of a film screening sponsored by the Office of Respect for Life, June 10. Jennifer A. Ruggiero, director of the Office of Respect for Life, welcomed viewers to Bakhita Hall at the St. John Neumann Pastoral Center and said the film, “Come What May,” offered important lessons about pro-life principles.

Some things you just have to do for yourself
Last week, I met my husband for lunch so he could take a break from remodeling a customer’s bathroom. While we were waiting to be served, he took the instructions for a new pedestal sink out of his pocket to read. As I’ve seen him do often, he sat there shaking his head, typical of his being disgusted with the quality of directions, and passed the paper over to me to read.
