What should you do first?
One of the very first steps that should be taken when thinking about applying for grant funding is to develop a brief, succinct description of the project idea, addressing these basic questions:
- What is going to be done?
- Why is it so important to do it?
- How will it be done and by whom?
- How much money is required and for what general purpose?
If the thought of answering these questions makes you want to turn and run, don't fret. Instead, have a conversation with a teaching colleague, your principal or with a School Grants consultant - often simply talking about the project will help to solidify the ideas around it.
The School Grant Consultants have also developed a Grant Application Process and form to use to obtain their assistance. Completing this form may also help you to see where some additional thought is needed, or where you may need to ask for assistance.
Putting your ideas down on paper will help you to organize and think through your concept - and your notes will serve as an invaluable tool for communicating during the grant writing process and for refining and constructing well-conceived final proposal.
Your notes can also serve as an excellent vehicle for obtaining feedback from colleagues. Obtaining substantive input from others regarding the project's uniqueness, feasibility, significance and timeliness can be extremely helpful in developing a competitive final proposal.
Of course you may be inspired by the monthly Grant Alerts Newsletter, which includes information on technology grants, product donations, and awards. The newsletter also offers timely tips for grant seekers.
The most important thing to remember is that you're not in this alone. Representatives from the School Development Office cgiangreco@diometuchen.org and the School Grant consultants obdconsult@yahoo.com are available to work with you: developing your idea, linking you to others with whom you might collaborate, writing and filing the grant, and celebrating your successes!
