Teens Look at Life: A Pro-Life Essay/Arts Contest
Grades 9-12

Write an Essay, Skit, or Song. 

Themes:

  1. “Before I formed you I knew you, before you were born I set you apart.”  Jeremiah 1:5.  Explain.

  2. God sent the Angel Gabriel to Mary to tell her she would have a son named Jesus.  “I am the handmaid of the Lord” said Mary.  “Let what you have said be done to me”.  Luke 1:26-38.  Mary said “Yes” to God.  What is God asking of you and how do you say “Yes” to Him?

Write a Campaign Speech:

  1. Here in the United States, our secular way of life and many of our laws are in direct contrast to the teachings of the Catholic Church.  If you were a legislator, what changes in our culture and our laws would you advocate?  How would you help to bring a culture of life to our country?

Contest Rules:

Essay – Essays or speech should be typed and between 300 – 500 words.

Skits - Skits should be 5 – 7 minutes long and no more than 5 typed pages of dialogue.

Songs – Songs should be written by the student and no longer than 2 ½ minutes.  Melody may be borrowed, but lyrics should be original.  Record on a regular-size cassette or CD.  Include a typewritten copy of the lyrics.

This Contest is for Schools, Youth Groups and Religious Education Programs.  Please submit all entries to the Diocesan Pro-Life Office for judging.

You Are Priceless!
God loves us all as His children and in His eyes each of us is priceless!

Poster Contest Rules (grades 1-8)

  • “Drawings” should be in bright colors using 8 ½” x 11” white poster board. (Drawings will not be accepted if they are not the correct size).

  • All drawings must pertain to the Respect Life theme.  Drawing may contain some words.

  • Drawings should be freehand. Do not paste magazine pictures or computer-generated drawings onto posters. 

Poetry Contest Rules (grades 6-8 only)

  • Only one entry per student.  Students may enter a poster OR a poem but not both.

  • Poems should be typed and may not exceed 21 lines.

Judging:

This Contest is for Schools and Religious Education Programs. A first place poster will be selected for each grade and a first place poem for each grade 6-8 will be submitted to the Diocese for judging. 

Winners will be chosen from across the diocese. The winning drawings will be used to make a 2007/2008 Respect-Life Calendar.

Diocesan winners will receive a cash prize and will be announced by March 1, 2007.   Winners will be contacted by phone.
Drawings and poems will be judged based on grade level, creativity, clarity of message and visual appeal.
