FLAME OF CHARITY FOUNDATION CELEBRATES 20TH ANNIVERSARY Two businessmen active in their parishes and community will be honored at the Diocese of Metuchen’s 20 th Flame of Charity Dinner to be held on October 28, at 6 p.m. in the Hyatt Regency Hotel, New Brunswick. Richard P. Diegnan, of Bernardsville and Deacon Anthony J. Gostkowski, of East Brunswick , will receive Flame of Charity awards during a presentation at the dinner. Established by the Diocese’s first Bishop, Theodore Cardinal McCarrick, The Flame of Charity Dinner was originally called the Business and Industry Dinner. In 1990, it was renamed by the Most Rev. Edward T. Hughes, now Bishop Emeritus of Metuchen. The premier fundraising event for the Flame of Charity Foundation, the Dinner supports the work of Catholic Charities, Diocese of Metuchen. Bishop Paul G. Bootkoski said he is gratified that so many individuals have supported the Flame of Charity Dinner over the last two decades. “Our Lord calls on us to share our bounty with those who have nothing and through this event many have responded to His call,” the Bishop said. Over 700 people attended last year’s dinner which raised almost 300,000 for Catholic Charities which each year serves thousands of clients through some 130 programs. Bishop Bootkoski called this year’s honorees men whose lives serve as examples and challenges to us all. “Whenever there has been a need, Mr. Diegnan and Deacon Gostkowski have readily responded,” the Bishop said. Known for his charitable works, Diegnan will receive the Flame of Charity’s Humanitarian of the Year Award. He is past president and co-owner of Atlantic Detroit Diesel Allison and currently serves as a consultant. He is the managing member of ADDA Realty L.L.C. and is also a director of Enterprise Bank. A member of numerous civic organizations, Diegnan received the New Jersey Statesman Award for his outstanding service. Presently, he is co-chair of the Campaign for the Heart at Morristown Memorial Hospital . He is a past president of the Flame of Charity Foundation and past president of the Parish Council of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Bernardsville. Deacon Gostkowski will be given the Foundation’s Community Servant Award. Ordained a deacon in 1996, he has served as St. Bartholomew Parish in East Brunswick . He is a member of the parish’s Client Service Team and Saint Vincent DePaul Society Conference. He performs hospital ministry at Saint Peter’s University Hospital in New Brunswick and Carrier Clinic in Belle Mead. Gostkowski is also a member of the Pastoral Team of Saint Patrick’s Cathedral, New York where he has assisted at daily Mass since his ordination. He is a member, too, of the Saint Patrick’s Cathedral Council. Currently, Gostkowski is a member of the Flame of Charity Foundation Board and the Diocese’s Diaconate Personnel Board, as well as a Knight of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. He has served as a Scout Leader in the Boy Scouts of America and an Advisory Board member of Bishop George Ahr High School . A Certified Public Accountant, Gostkowski is Executive Vice President of Engelhard Hanovia, Inc., a New York based family investment company. Co-chairing this year’s Flame of Charity Dinner are Christopher J. Killmurray, Esq. of Dayton and Thomas C. Carton of Bernardsville. Cost for the dinner is $200.
