Tuition Assistance Grants

The Diocese of Metuchen provides tuition assistance grants to families in financial need who attend one of our diocesan Catholic elementary or high schools. These grants are provided throughThe Foundation for Catholic Education Endowment Fund. Since 2001 the Diocese has distributed over $500,000 in tuition assistance grants each year; for the 2008-2009 school year it was more than $780,000 in assistance. Through the generosity of donors and sponsors through the Diocese, funding to provide this level of diocesan tuition assistance comes from three sources:

  • The annual diocesan collection taken up in January in all parishes for The Foundation for Catholic Education
  • 50% of the net proceeds from the annual Spotlight on Catholic Education Dinner
  • Interest income earned on the endowment fund.

For the 2008-2009 school year, The Foundation for Catholic Education was able to provide the following assistance:

Parishioner vs. non-parishioner rates
Each parish school sets its own tuition and fee schedules. Generally, since the home parish provides a financial subsidy to the school, there may be different tuition rates for students of parishioners vs. non-parishioners. Please check with the local school for specific rates.

Operating Cost per Child
Based on the school financial budget cycle, financial data for the current school year is not yet available. Once it is available, the Operating Cost Per Child information will be updated.

Using the 2007-2008 school year financial data across all of our elementary schools, the following represents the average operation cost per child: $4513. The cost to educate a child in one of our schools is covered by 3 main sources of income which are outlined below. Using the $4513. average above,

Percentage of Cost Covered by Tuition and Fees 74.8%
Percentage of Cost Covered by Parish Subsidy 12.7%
Percentage of Cost Covered by Fundraising and Donations 12.5%

The ideal breakdown of operating costs for any Diocese of Metuchen Catholic school should be covered as follows:
