The Office of Multicultural Ministry supports other diocesan offices, pastors, and parish leaders in ministering to culturally diverse populations throughout the diocese by understanding and meeting their unique cultural needs as Catholics, providing information and resources, educating and advising diocesan leaders, pastors and parish leaders, and the ethnic communities on respective initiatives; promoting understanding and appreciation of the rich cultural diversity and ethnic, religious traditions in the diocese; and developing practical ways to address racism in the parishes and schools and offer resources.
Building Intercultural Competence for Ministers is one of the programs sponsored by this office. This is an interactive, theologically grounded, and prayerful ministry program developed by the United States Catholic Conference of Bishops (USCCB). The Building Intercultural Competence for Ministers (BICM) program offers local pastoral leaders a foundation of knowledge and skills for working across cultures in ministry. It explores theological foundations for intercultural ministry, the notion of culture itself, intercultural communication, racism, and other obstacles to harmonious work across culture.
