Holy Days of Obligation & Lenten Regulation

Holy Days of ObligationHoly Days of Obligation are days when the faithful are obliged to participate at Mass, "unless excused for a serious reason (for example, illness, the care of infants) or dispensed by their own pastor" [CCC 2181]. Moreover, it is also when the faithful are "to refrain from engaging in work or activities that hinder the worship owed to God, the joy proper to the Lord’s Day, the performance of the works of mercy, and the appropriate relaxation of mind and body. Family needs or important social service can legitimately excuse from the obligation of Sunday rest. The faithful should see to it that legitimate excuses do not lead to habits prejudicial to religion, family life, and health" [CCC 2185].
All Sundays are Holy Days of Obligation (which also includes the Solemnity of the Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of the Lord). In addition to Sunday, the following days are classified by the Latin Rite dioceses of the United States of America, in conformity with canon 1246, as Holy Days of Obligation:

Lenten RegulationAs we prepare to enter the holy season of Lent, the Diocese of Metuchen has released the official regulations for 2026 to help the faithful observe this time of prayer, penance, and reflection.
Lent is an invitation to deepen our relationship with Christ through intentional sacrifice. To assist you in your Lenten journey, please take note of the following fasting and abstinence requirements.
Key Dates for Fast and Abstinence
During Lent, certain days are set aside for specific spiritual disciplines regarding food:Ash Wednesday (February 18): A day of both fasting and abstinence.
Lenten Fridays: All other Fridays during Lent (Feb. 20, 27, and Mar. 6, 13, 20, 27) are days of abstinence.
Good Friday (April 3): A day of both fasting and abstinence.
The Church provides specific definitions for what it means to fast and abstain:
Fasting
Who it applies to: Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59.
What it is: Limiting oneself to one full meal, plus two smaller meals that together do not exceed the size of the full meal.Abstinence
Who it applies to: All Catholics 14 years of age and older.
What it is: Refraining from eating meat (such as beef, chicken, pork, and turkey).
